Getting ready to deconfine and increase your market share with the right competencies

Published on
May 3, 2020

As we begin to experience deconfinement after the cusp of the COVID-19 crisis passes by, I would like to review the concept of Transformational Leadership.

What does Transformational Leadership mean? And why discuss this topic right now ?

Transformational Leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes a change in individuals and social systems. It creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders.It does so by :

  • Enhancing the motivation, morale, and performance of followers by connecting the follower's sense of identity and self to the mission and the collective identity of the organization;
  • Being a role model for followers that inspires them;
  • Challenging followers to take greater ownership of their work, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of followers, so the leader can align followers with tasks that optimize their performance

Why is this topic important for our organizations as we start our deconfinement ?

  • Transformational leaders work with their teams to implement change
  • Transformational leaders create a vision for their followers and guide the change through inspiration and motivation
  • They are excellent role models and their followers emulate many of their actions

All of these characteristics will be critical as we work on re-launching our economies and securing a competitive place for our organization.

According to Bass and Riggio, “transformational leaders help followers grow and develop into leaders by responding to individual followers' needs by empowering them and by aligning the objectives and goals of the individual followers, the leader, the group, and the larger organization."They do so by :

  1. Building a stronger culture that fits the people in the business, the nature of the business, and the customers the business serves
  2. Improving the “Esprit de Corps”, by ensuring that everyone in the organization shares the same vision, and feels enthusiastic about being part of that vision and working together toward clearly defined collective goals
  3. Communicating clearly, consistently, and comprehensively (This represents the single-most powerful tool for a transformational leader)
  4. Positively impacting financial results: even if you improve the culture, the esprit de corps, and the communication, the business will not be transformed if the financial results do not follow
  5. A transformational leader’s mission is also to train other transformational leaders, who are ready to take the reins and continue the ongoing process of business transformation
