Agile Transformation – How can Human Resources add value?

Published on
February 9, 2020

To compete and be relevant in today’s quick-paced and ever-evolving world, organizations must find and deploy new ways of working to deliver value-added products/ services that address their customers’ pains and needs.

The way that most organizations are doing this is by becoming increasingly Agile, which requires a shift to a Lean-Agile mindset and culture throughout the organization.Culture is made of the values and set of behaviors that define how things get done in an organization. It steers and guides individuals to act appropriately and make the choices that advance the organization’s strategy.

By ignoring culture, organizations risk transformation failure

Although there is no one single winning-agile culture, an agile culture will typically include the following defining elements :

  • It promotes an external, rather than an internal, focus
  • It promotes delegation over control
  • It encourages boldness over caution
  • It emphasizes more action and less planning
  • It values collaboration more than individual effort

Human Resources departments are accountable for the people agenda and need to play a pivotal role in transforming and enabling the organization to embrace agility.

An Agile approach requires Human Resources to reconsider the way they support and enable the organization

It will demand, for example :

  1. Moving from a support department to an empowering agent of the Agile transformation roadmap
  2. Moving towards embedding Agile competencies and capability in the organization through attracting, developing and retaining qualified talent
  3. Moving from concentrating on individuals to focusing on teams
  4. Moving from hierarchical, fixed organization structures to team-based, networked and flexible organization structures
  5. Moving from motivating employees extrinsically to leaning more towards intrinsic motivators
  6. Moving from annual individual performance appraisals to continuous team-based feedback
